The Tragedy of (Non)Matching Colours: Sax

A little aesthetics video I put together to share with everyone the plight that we all know so well: when you buy something and the colours don’t match. I have been meaning to do this is photograph form for months now, but since I told myself that I would do at least one non-haul video before the end of the year, then why not a video?

These aren’t even all my sax items – only those that are specifically from Lolita brands (plus one bonus Axes Femme blouse I use with Lolita). I haven’t included anything that’s totally offbrand, like some of my cardigans, because Western offbrand items don’t tend to be advertised as ‘sax’ (instead they’re marked as pastel/baby/sky blue, so they don’t count as misselling the colour expectations). Notice how the sax Angelic Pretty bits are all on a pile of its own and still don’t match each other 100%!

I’m sure that there will be more sax items to come that will not match the ones I already have. One can only pray to Mana-sama that one day an item will arrive that will match something in this sax collection. But for now I hope you will enjoy this visualisation of one of Lolita fashion’s life tragedies.

  1. Ugh yes, it can be such a struggle! Sometimes I get annoyed at having similar accessories, then I remind myself that it is a slightly different pink so I really do need both...

    1. Exactly! I feel like for every new piece I get which I think will match something, I only end up getting another shade of sax. And navy, and wine, and ivory, and every other colour I add to my wardrobe. It's a never-ending story and is why I admire people who can successfully create monotone coords because that shiet is difficult!

  2. Hahaha, this is both eye-twitch-inducing (you’d think sax would stay the same at least within the same year of release of the same brand...), and yet very lovely (especially with the music and timing, I love it!) at the same time.

    1. Thank you! This is the effect I was hoping for. The frustration is so real, especially with that AP pile all on its own - although other brands are terrible too. That BtSSB dress is a very mint kind of "sax", then Innocent World seems to think that dusty/powder shades classify as sax too and Bodyline just has no clue about pastels whatsoever there.

    1. Yeah, pink is notorious for that, everyone always mentions pink as the nightmare to match.

  4. Awww this is so annoying ;_; I also have a 'sax'colored jsk from AP but it's more like a cyan-blue so it doesn't match any kind of sax-ish socks...sigh. But yeah I guess they just change the colors to the kind of print or garment they are making, not just keeping it all the same and I understand that as well. But just, maybe keep 3 tones of sax XD ?

    1. Yes, even if they stuck to only three versions of the colour it would still help a lot in ensuring that you get a matching piece! Because at the moment no-one is really 100% certain what sax colour should even be and what that means - brands aren't helping by adding a whole new shade with every new sax release.

  5. *ad voice ON* From the producers that brought us "The tragedy of nonmatching black pieces" and the sequel "Why are there so many off-white variations?", we have the honour to present... "The tragedy of nonmatching colours (sax)"!! *ad voice OFF*

jk, I loved the video <3 I have the same problem when it comes to cream/ivory/offwhite pieces, even from the same brand and labeled under the same colour tag, argh!

    1. It'd be great to make all these other episodes! <3 I have lots of navy pieces that also look nothin like each other - and I agree on cream/ivory/offwhite. It's beyond me how people manage to make great shiro coords when so many pieces are different shade of white or have a different undertone with cream. I've had a few "cream" pieces that are more like very, very pale yellow and a few "white" pieces that are more like ivory/unbleached. It's a constant battle.
