October Coords Roundup

And so the Spooky Month is coming to an end. I am definitely noticing the effects of a partial return to the office, as even when the will to dress up is there, the energy often isn’t. That and once again my brain is plagued with all the non-seasonal ideas - seriously, what the hell is up with that? Why do I want to wear thick cardigans in summer and light summery clothes when it gets cold? I don’t know if it’s just my mindset that’s not attuned to the seasons or if this is a sign of me needing some wardrobe reshuffle. Or if I’m just looking for an excuse to do a wardrobe reshuffle because I want to do one anyway.

Coord 1: Fairytales & Travel

| Song and Temple Fairytale Library skirt and scrunchie | A.R.W. blouse | Amavel cardigan | Innocent World Short Boots OTKs | Deary heels | Patisserie Pink Bookshelf brooch |

Sometimes minimum effort doesn't have to look like minimum effort. Distracting people with layers and accessories helps with that.

Proof of print name.

Kicking the spooky month off on the very first day… with a completely non-spooky coordinate. Spooky stuff isn’t my cup of tea, so while there will undoubtedly be some appropriate outfits, for the most part we’ll see more of this sort of cosy stuff. This is in part my getting my frills fix at the end of the working week, part trying to make it to Fluffy Tori’s Coord Mashup Fairytales & Travel theme before that closed (which I didn’t make in the end), and part using my newest acquisitions to prove to myself that they weren’t unjustified impulse buys. This skirt is one that I typically travel in whenever I’m going somewhere, plus it’s called Fairytale Library, hence this for the Coord Mashup theme. And I did say that I would get more on the navy and green train, it is a very good train to be on. The rest was just trying to get through the day with as little stress as possible - a tall order considering that it was still the beginning of the academic year for me, but one can hope nonetheless.

Coord 2: Casual Monday

| Bodyline L380 skirt | Angelic Pretty Logo Embroidery Tutleneck cutsew | Snag Sweetheart tights | offbrand shoes, earrings and bracelet | After Midnight necklace | Sweet Dolly House Cookie Bon Bon ring |

Very glad that the ear stud just about made an appearance.

I have a feeling that the writing on the bracelet's heart charm is actually a brand name, but I haven't investigated that yet.

Comfort and warmth needed to enter the chat, and upon realising that I haven’t worn this skirt with reds much, the rest of the outfit happened on its own. It’s definitely very comfortable and pretty warm, great for a working from home day half of which was spent cheering up my cat, who was mostly hiding in the bathroom because we’ve had the audacity to upturn his routine by my parents going off on holiday. You know, the usual human crimes against felinekind. But it’s fine, that was the most pets I ever got to give him probably ever, which makes up for that.

Coord 3: Spying on the Neighbours

| Lady Sloth Look at My Dreamy Sky OP | L’Esprit de la Noblesse Le Nuage blouse | Bodyline L380 skirt as underskirt | Miss Point corset | Red Maria tights | offbrand shoes | Cutie Creator headbow | Tiny Passerine Creations The Duchess’ Tea parure |

Distracting people from minimal makeup with eyelashes from Lola's Lashes was the theme for this month.

This aquamarine-style gem honestly photographs a different colour every single time.

Well, the outfit was put together for filming a video, but as Spy was hovering around my feet whilst I was taking outfit pics, we ended up taking this gem of a photo, so now this is the Spying on the Neighbours look. It was supposed to be something easy and just let the blouse do the talking, but as I put the dress over it, I realised that it definitely needed that extra pizazz from the corset. There was still room for laziness with minimal hair and the false lashes doing all the talking makeup-wise.

Meme us!

Coord 4: Working Clash

| Metamorphose Polka Dots Shirring Pinafore JSK | offbrand cutsew, jacket, earrings and bow clip | Angelic Pretty Colourful Polkadots OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | Boguta underskirt | Chocomint hair clip | Promised Land Creations necklace | vintage brooch |

The struggle of trying to compromise your good selfie angle with an angle that makes the hair clip visible.

All the patterns!

Dots and tartan and stars? Well, yeah, basically. It’s weird, I admit, but I also think it kind of works? It’s somewhere on the spectrum of that quirky teacher that has sort of lost the grip on reality, but you kind of respect that as a power move. If I were a coffee drinker, I’d definitely have a cup of something strong with this because it was a Monday, but since I can’t stand the flavour of coffee, I had to gain power through a bold look to get through the day.

Coord 5: Mildly Gothic

| Metamorphose Classical Sister OP | MuFish tights | Vivienne Westwood x Melissa Anglomania heels | offbrand hair clips | Promised Land Creations earrings | After Midnight necklace | Violet Fane brooch |

Hair and makeup was in part inspired by prompt nr 8 of the AYWi30C challenge look I did.

That whole series of brooches was super tempting, but even though I don't wear this one too often, I could not resist.

As per usual, my take on gothic lolita leans pretty classic, but I think this one just about slides by as gothic, don’t you think? If I did darker makeup, it probably would’ve been more obvious, though even as is all the little touches help tip it in that direction. It felt like so long between this coord and the previous one (well, it has by current standards, entire 12 days have gone by with nothing even lolita-adjacent!), so I eased myself gently with something comfortable. And gosh dang it, I do love this OP, I am so glad that I succumbed to the treat yourself mentality back then.

Coord 6: Pumpkin Patch Trip

| Grove Deer Moon of Eternal Day OP | Innocent World Rose Lace Millefeuille bolero | Innocent World Fleurs Checkered OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | After Midnight beret | Cutie Creator headbow | offbrand earrings | My Inspiration brooch and necklace | Axes Femme collar | Angelic Pretty Melty Ribbon Chocolate ring |

A very good eyeliner day, even if I did the wing super tiny.

Btw, I picked this ring at the swap meet and it was in a box of free things. How could the brandwhore in me resist?

I wrote more about both the day and the outfit separately, so you can catch that post here.

Coord 7: Spooky Afternoon Tea at Ordsall Hall

| AatP Sugar Plum Fairy Princess JSK | Sentaro Star Sleeve blouse | Putumayo Celestial Light OTKs | offbrand shoes, earrings and ring | Vierge Vampur bonnet | Puvithel Crystal Heart necklace | vintage ring | handmade bracelet | Dalao Home wig |

A bold claim, but these Vierge Vampur bonnet are second only to Triple Fortune ones. You can try to change my mind if you wish, but there is little point.

Photographing black flocked velvet on a black organza is a nightmare, do not recommend.

And as above, this one was part of the previous post, so catch it there.

Coord 8: Casually Blue

| Meta Wizarding Lesson trousers | Angelic Pretty Whip Girl cutsew | Angelic Pretty Sugar Ribbon OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | vintage hat | Innocent World Original Crown Tassel brooch |

Let's be honest, the hat only came out for the photo.

Such a good lucky pack item, all these years later and it still serves me well.

That was a pretty RAAAARGH kind of Monday, which in turn demanded comfort and minimum effort. Luckily even very casual sweet ouji still looks as if effort was made. Cute, playful, perfectly boyish, did the job of getting me through Monday. What more could I ask for?

*~*~*~*

Since it’s only 2 days away now, let me wish you a Happy Halloween to all who celebrate or decide to do something for it. I do have half a mind to wear something spooky on Halloween itself, but this is all dependent on energy levels and I am setting tomorrow aside for filming the second half of that charity lookbook that I was going to do. (Half is done already, yay!)

As much as I would love to ‘get back on the train’ of dressing up a bit more regularly (and at least give everything that I own its 3rd or 2nd spin), I may have to accept that this is not realistic. The days of dressing up a few times per week are once again confined to weekends, which is still a lot compared to the Before Days, even if ‘the new normal’ created over the course of the pandemic makes me think like the standard is higher. But I definitely would like to squeeze in more outfits than this next month. I have a short break coming up, which I plan on taking at least one coord with me for, and hopefully it will be an overall much quieter month before the festive madness begins (which I’m still on the fence about how much I should participate in this year).

So we’ll see how things go. How was your Spooky Month? Did you do everything that you wanted to? Squeezed in all the spooks that you could? Enjoyed the seasonal changes of October? I hope that you did - November is traditionally pretty dreary in the Northern Hemisphere, so hopefully whatever fun stuff you were able to fit in to this month will get you through this time between Halloween and Christmas.

Spooky Weekend

It feels like a while since I dedicated a whole separate post to meetup stuff. But it’s also been a while since I frilled hard all weekend whilst actually doing stuff rather than just sitting at home. And since it’s also spooky stuff (or half spooky and half just seasonal), so it would fit with this month’s Bibliotheca theme of Halloween, there was really no reason to not make this into a separate post.

SATURDAY

| Grove Deer Moon of Eternal Day OP | Innocent World Rose Lace Millefeuille bolero | Innocent World Fleurs Checkered OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | After Midnight beret | Cutie Creator headbow | offbrand earrings | My Inspiration brooch and necklace | Axes Femme collar | Angelic Pretty Melty Ribbon Chocolate ring |

Sometimes you think you pin your beret securely enough and then it turns out not to be the case.

Next vintage fair I go to I'm looking for more fur layers, even this faux fur one was great for keeping warm in the wind.

On Saturday my friend and I went to a pumpkin patch. Don’t let the indoor outfit pictures fool you, I did have a moment of sanity and changed out of these very well coordinated shoes into my more practical plain brown boots - which was a godsend because pumpkin patches are, you know, pretty muddy. Still considering how I coordinated this whole outfit around: a) the seasonal colours; b) comfort (all that full shirring baby!); c) being practical for the weather and activity (i.e. will it match my brown boots and brown leather jacket), this is really quite nice. It was a bit of a last minute burst of inspiration too, since I had no clue what to wear until pretty much the night before, so I’m very happy that it worked out like this.

I had never been to a pumpkin patch before. Not having a car, which is sort of required for getting to them, was the chief obstacle, but I also never particularly felt the incentive. After however-many months of being cooped up at home with no possibility of fun outdoorsy stuff? Yeah, I was definitely ready, willing and excited to try new things. Plus it’s the company that makes it.

Not sure what do the Minions have to do with a corn maze - other than colour - but this was very clearly for kids.

Honestly, same.

I understand the appeal now, it's satisfying to see a field full of orange dots like these.

So off we went, starting out with a trip through a labyrinth within the field of corn, which is where we picked up most of the mud from. It was really no joke and I looked at the people in wellies with considerable envy, even though my Timbaland boots did very well all things considered. The theming around it was somehow mostly Harry Potter, not sure why, definitely don’t see this being legal given the royalties and stuff - if they only gave me a stuffed JKR that I could stab with something, that would’ve been fun, but as is I’m just happy that she won’t see a penny of that money.

A little photo op for the criminally inclined, I guess?

No shrieking happened whilst we were there.

What you don't see here is the awkward half-squat I had to do because this was not adult-sized.

Having completed the labyrinth through the longer route (which wasn’t that long at all, this must’ve been longer for children rather than adults), we entered the pumpkin field and had our pick. My friend went a bit mad, picking three in the end, after talking herself out of a fourth one. I wasn’t going to get any, but then the good mood spread to me and I picked a cute baby one, or as baby one as I could find, and will figure out what to do with it in due course. Most likely I’ll cook something because I don’t trust myself to carve it and the thought of watching all that edible stuff rot for the sake of aesthetic (especially as I don’t have an outdoors to let it rot on) just makes me feel bad for wasting food. But how I’ll hack into it without hurting myself or what I’ll even end up doing with it - that is future Paulina’s problem to figure out.

I found my baby.

Words cannot express how happy village bakeries like this one make me.

Afterwards we had a very brief wander round the village the pumpkin patch was next to, since it was very quaint and picturesque. We tried to stop for lunch somewhere, but the pub didn’t look to be serving any food and the chippy literally closed as we were about to go in there (that was before 3pm, so that must be one very quiet village!). But I did pick up a loaf of bread and a millionaire’s shortbread from the local bakery, so between those and the pumpkin I was really a very happy bunny indeed.

SUNDAY

| AatP Sugar Plum Fairy Princess JSK | Sentaro Star Sleeve blouse | Putumayo Celestial Light OTKs | offbrand shoes, earrings and ring | Vierge Vampur bonnet | Puvithel Crystal Heart necklace | vintage ring | handmade bracelet | Dalao Home wig |

A new pair of lashes from Lola's Lashes - someone save me from myself, please, I think I may be addicted to these now.

How long have I owned this dress now? Only now found out that there are crowns in the print.

Then on Sunday the same friend and I went for a spooky afternoon tea at Ordsall Hall. A fancy location and a much calmer activity warranted a much fancier getup, so we have this decidedly gothic ensemble. Even though the fabric of this blouse annoys me a little with how it has absolutely no give, the dramatic sleeve works beautifully with the flocked velvet JSK, and there is really no way to go wrong with black and wine red.

Immediately upon arriving at the Great Hall, the staff were totally in love with our outfits and really sweet about it. Since the event coincided with the beginning of the half term school holidays, it was marketed mostly at families with kids, though I was very pleased to notice that we weren’t the only child-free party there. Having said this, the fact that this was primarily aimed at kids showed not only through the decor, but the tea spread itself. Granted, at £12.95pp, I can see where the money went and wasn’t expecting loads - I’ve had plenty which were much worse for much more, though also a few which were much better for about the same. But since some of that money also goes to support a local historical landmark, I really am not mad and being able to have even such a basic kiddie afternoon tea in a literal Tudor manor was aesthetic enough. And Ordsall Hall does claim to have a ghost on site, so extra spooks there.

I love Ordsall Hall so much and to have tea where nobility would've hosted banquets like half a millennium ago is incredible.

My first hint that the tea may have been aimed more at kids than adults.

To paraphrase a meme, it's not much, but it's an honest spread. Very sweet though!

A friend.

And the aesthetic touches. Most of these shop-bought sweets I brought home with me.

As the tea service was pretty short and the hall was very clearly trying to close for the day, we retreated to my place for a bit of more tea and chatter. Whilst I totally would’ve done this on my own too, it’s great to have a friend to join you on little adventures like this, so hopefully there will be more like it. And after those two days I feel sufficiently filled up on spooks to last me. Even though there is one more official Halloween meetup which I will attend, since Halloween is not my season, this already feels like I’m doing so much more. Let’s hope that I will be able to channel that level of energy for Christmas again because I sure wouldn’t want my favourite time of the year to feel like it fell short compared to one that I don’t necessarily care for.

1 Dress 4 Looks Take 52

Again, not a dress, but I’m not changing the name just for a couple of posts. Because after some thought I decided to do these Fan+Friend shorts separately, so we’re looking at the ivory ones now and the black ones next month. The coord ideas for both will be pretty interchangeable, but the two colours give them distinct enough vibes that it just makes sense to have two posts.

Look 1: Cupid

| Laura Ashley blouse | Snag Sweetheart tights | offbrand shoes, rose clips and bracelet | handmade wing clips | Rose Marie Seoir necklace | Patisserie Pink Lock and Key brooch |

Kicking things off with something very romantic and yet very wearable. I’m totally seeing this with some sort of a short blonde curly wig and lots of blush for ultimate cupid vibes. Though with less blush, as I said, this is still very wearable and pretty chill, especially given the comfort level of these shorts. Definitely one that I look forward to wearing at some point.

Look 2: Chocolate

| Axes Femme blouse | Angelic Pretty Odekake Ribbon OTKs | Sosic Shop heels | offbrand beret | Wonderbox Designs rosette | Lady Sloth Winter Spices necklace | Innocent World Chiffon wrist cuffs | Twinkle Kitty Boutique rings |

Sort of sticking to a vaguely Valentine’s Day theme, this one’s for the chocolate lovers. Pretty simple again, though definitely with room to be dressed up if required. I would love to see how this blouse and these shorts work together. The shorts are very voluminous, while the blouse is practically a tent unless cinched in somewhere, so there could be room for some fun billowing effects.

Look 3: Kai

| Axes Femme cardigan | Metamorphose Snow Crystal OTKs | Irregular Choice Total Freedom shoes | vintage hat | Celestial Castle hair clip | Bibelot Rose necklace | Sweet Dolly House brooch |

In case you’re unfamiliar with the story, Kai was the brother who was kidnapped by the Snow Queen in Hans Christian Andersen’s tale. This would obviously be something she’d make Kai wear mid-kidnapping and since we know that I love a snowflake motif, it’s safe to say that I vibe a lot with this. The shoe alternative would be my ivory short boots with the fur toppers, but I couldn’t be bothered to get them out for the flatlay, plus the more pure white shade of these ones balances out the more pure white shade of the cardigan against all of those ivory tones.

Look 4: Punk

| offbrand cutsew, blazer and hat | BtSSB Border OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | Lady Sloth brooch | Fluffy Tori patch | Annie’s Flower brooch |

Finishing this set out outfits with one for the more punky lads out there. I am still not entirely convinced that punk lolita or ouji work, the lolita/ouji aesthetic feels too clean for the messy chaos that punk thrives on, but it is a catchy label. Though the upside of that is that the outfit straddles the line between being alternative and still somehow vaguely professional, so who knows, maybe one deal I’ll like wear it to work or something?

I certainly did not set out on having this post be so heavy on sweet looks. However, whilst I am still here with my Tudor ouji goals overall, it is good to remind myself that these shorts are with me to stay and that they can carry more than just one look. All of these can be dressed down and made more comfortable, which may turn out to be the options that I need for when their wear time comes. Because as fun as Tudor ouji is, it just isn’t always the most practical thing out there - but these shorts don’t live by such strict rules.

Disneybounding Coord 5

Up until now I’ve been doing these posts as if I was actually going away to WDW: being mindful of luggage, trying to reuse as many items as possible etc. But I’m not actually going, not for the foreseeable future anyway. Which means that I don’t have to restrict myself like this anymore. It will also give me more options to pick from in the future if/when that trip could actually happen. So in a switch from how the Disneybounding posts have been going on so far, enjoy the next one!

The Character

The Sword in the Stone was one of those Disney films that I really enjoyed watching as a kid and still occasionally quote/sing - but it’s nowhere near their biggest hits or top of my faves list anything. Moreover, as a child, due to the distinct lack of positive female characters, I didn’t necessarily have a character to relate to much. Now, as a grown up, I realise that what was drawing me in then and who I relate to now is Archimedes. That grumpy, snarky, sassy owl is an eternal mood - I too just want to be cosy, comfortable, and left undisturbed for the most part. And if I lived with an overly cheerful, sprightly, slightly ditzy wizard like Merlin, I’d too be extra grumpy for my life constantly being turned upside down for the sake of learning or adventure. Archimedes is the real hero of that film and a true icon to aspire to emulate.

The Outfit

| Innocent World White Double Braid Tartan skirt | Axes Femme blouse and faux fur collar | Innocent World Lauretta OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | offbrand beret | Imperial Fiddlesticks Emporium headbow | Patisserie Pink Bookshelf and Bottled Stardust brooches | Enchantlic Enchantilly Queen Cat Secret Library ring |

Given how little brown I actually own, this coord is very cohesive and very Archimedes. Not just in terms of colouring, but in how it’s a more cosy look - perfect for an owl who just wants to have a bit of peace and quiet. The sleeves on this blouse are also so voluminous that they could easily be said to emulate wings to an extent.

Some of those pleats have faded over the years and washes, but there are still all these pintucks and lace to add visual interest to the blouse.

That detachable fur collar has probably seen more use on its own than on the cardigan it's supposed to go with.

Speaking of the blouse, I do love how all those pleats and subtle details give it extra dimension and stop it from being a boring way to keep one’s upper half covered. All that texture could in a way mimic feathers at a very big stretch. And that is also why I decided to include that fur collar. Extra warmth is also nice, but Archimedes deals with a lot of things and people ruffling his feathers (metaphorically and literally). I thought that the fur collar was a fun way to show that, whilst also being a potentially practical element.

That I haven't yet changed all my socks to lace-up design ones speaks highly of my strong will.

Even though generally I would avoid OTK socks if I anticipated doing a lot of walking, Innocent World is a bit of an exception to this rule. Their socks very comfortably stretch over my knees and stay there reasonably well even without sock glue or garters (though they obviously improve the durability of that stay). And the lace-up design ones, such as these, are the perfect neutral base, looking very smart and providing some detail in that area without crowding it.

Hush Puppies boots are also so well made, both pairs I own were bought second hand and they hold up so well.

In a similar vein, whilst heeled boots don’t seem like a smart choice for a potential theme park visit, Hush Puppies somehow manage to make theirs alright for long walks. Of course, Archimedes doesn’t need to walk being an owl, but since flying around isn’t an option for me, sensible footwear is the next best choice. And if I really needed something even more sensible than those, I could whip out my Oxford shoes.

I zoomed in to see if that winged creature on the Bookshelf brooch could be an owl, but I don't think so.

You may have noticed the absence of actual owl motifs in this coord. Whilst I love owls in general, most owl things that I own aren’t wearable - and what was, i.e. earrings, ended up in the earrings purge (though granted, at the time of writing I still haven’t actually found a way to dispose of what I decided to part with). However, owls are a symbol of wisdom and learning, so instead I decided to accessorise with another favourite motif of mine: books. The Bottled Stardust brooch is there as a subtle nod to magic, with Archimedes being a wizard’s familiar, while everything else is to reflect the wisdom that he imparts on the characters and the audience throughout the film in his typical sarcastic way.

This headbow has a very faint writing print on it, which we could say is more references to owls and wisdom.

It seems that for the most part my Disneybounding coords are all about them berets, which is not a bad thing. The option is there to either leave the beret out completely, since my natural hair would provide all the colour balance required in an all-brown outfit, or I could bring a spare brown headbow for a bit of variety. Then again, this is for Disneybounding at WDW eventually, so the fewer hair accessories that might escape or get lost the better in the long run.

Cats: getting on things they shouldn't since time immemorial.

Lastly: a quick bonus! This is what trying to do flatlay photos looks like with cats. Several attempts were made at moving the boi away, but he just would not be kept away from all this textile goodness. I drew the line at him trying to eat the beret, at which point a punishment of banishment from the room had to be imposed, but not before capturing his disruptive attempts in photographic form.

The Park

With the previous outfits in this series so far I usually had a clear vision of where each look would be worn. Other than Disney Springs for shopping and the Grand Floridian for fancy afternoon tea, which were on my list of things to do and which haven’t had a look dedicated to them yet, I’ve covered all the main parks already - and I don’t think that this is one for either of those two.

Picture specifically selected to show off how Archimedes' brown colours would work around Magic Kingdom.
Photo by Jeff Krause on Flickr.

If anything, Archimedes seems best fit to Magic Kingdom. Animal Kingdom, for all the obvious reasons, tends to focus more on the Asian and African ecosystems, where your standard brown owl doesn’t really fit. The Sword in the Stone is also one of the older Disney films, maybe not quite the iconic classic, but still from the era of classic animation - Magic Kingdom, with its focus on classic Disney and all those castle vibes, really is the best fit for this. He would get along hanging out with the Sleeping Beauty’s fairy godmothers or telling Gaston off that he’s not all that.

Summary

For once, there isn’t much to say here. The coord is pretty much ready, no special additions required, all that remains to do is wait and see if I decide to take it with me whenever the WDW trip happens.
