1 Dress 4 Looks Take 55

Whilst I may have wanted a red gingham dress for its most typical look, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t others that I would like to do. And Chrysanthemum’s Concerto’s Lost in the Garden of Eden is the perfect blend of simple yet with detail, which lends itself well to a bunch of different looks. I’ve already proved that it can also be worn in a wintery way [], so here’s some more potential looks that it could do.

Look 1: Trad Country

| BtSSB 134*405 shirring blouse | Angelic Pretty Wrapping Cherry socks | Irregular Choice sandals | Cutie Creator hat | handmade necklace, earrings and bracelets | Twinkle Kitty Boutique rings | apron from BtSSB’s Polonaise Brillante JSK |

First we gotta get the obvious out of the way. Some part of my brain wanted to do full on gingham on gingham, and with these socks having a gingham ribbon on them and my gingham crop top it would have been possible, but I’ll save that for another time. This one is just your typical red gingham coord, the traditional country look with a straw hat and simple accessories. I’m still searching for a basket or a basket bag.

Look 2: Sort of 90s

| Nile Perch cutsew | offbrand jacket, shoes, hair ties and earrings | Angelic Pretty Diner Doll OTKs | Sweet Dolly House necklace | Dream Masquerade Carnival pin | Fluffy Tori pin |

This, on the other hand, is certainly less traditional for a red gingham JSK, at least within lolita fashion. But that’s why this outfit gets me all excited to wear it! It’s fun, it’s not serious, it’s comfortable and casual, it’s just the right kinds of retro and sweet that I’ve been into since around last year. Give me an occasion to wear this out somewhere, please!

Look 3: Elegant

| vintage jacket, gloves and necklace | MuFish tights | Vivienne Westwood x Melissa Anglomania shoes | Eat Me x Larme hair tie | My Inspiration brooch | offbrand earrings |

Not the typical sort of style to go for with gingham, but in its own weird way it works? Granted, this is definitely a coord that needs a hat, which I don’t have, not in red or black, so the hair tie is the next best thing that I could get. But red and black is never a bad colour combination, which is all I needed, really. Not sure where I’d wear it though, it’s sort of straddling that boundary between daywear and eveningwear. So I guess… cocktails?

Look 4: Sweet as Pie

| DreamV cutsew | Angelic Pretty Odekake Ribbon OTKs | Bodyline shoes | Chrysanthemum’s Concerto Lost in the Garden of Eden headbow | Beholder Fashions Apple Pie headdress | Once Upon a Cookie Treat Jelly Cookie necklace | Sweet Dolly House Cookie Bon Bon ring | Angelic Pretty Melty Ribbon Chocolate ring |

Truth be told, I just really wanted to put this apple pie headdress with this, but without going for anything too baker-ish with aprons and stuff. So instead I went a more chocolate way and whilst I’m not completely sold on this, I don’t think this needs more than a few minor tweaks. The two square necklines of the JSK and the cutsew should work really nicely, so if I can either add something light at the top or find darker brown sweet legwear to balance out the colours a little bit more evenly, I think this would be it.

As is often the case, there were a few looks which did not make the cut. Which only goes to show how versatile this dress is. Although my plan for this year is to divide some of my wardrobe into seasonal bits, where this would certainly get confined to being a spring/summer dress, this won’t happen straight away due to needing to sort out storage, so until then maybe I’ll manage to squeeze in a few of those less seasonal coords with this dress in. We’ll see.

Ranking all of my main pieces

Last week I tuned in to Joëlle’s livestream where she ranked all of her dresses. And as she was doing that, the schoolgirl energy of ‘I want to do that too’ kicked in. Except that I’m too indecisive and too overthinking to do it in a straightforward way like she has. So in true Paulina fashion, I overcomplicated the matter, but hopefully in a way that will make this into a more interesting post.

The Criteria

To make ranking all of my dresses easier I decided to score each one on the scale of 1 to 5 across five different categories. The combined total score will be what determines the ranking.

The criteria that I decided to go with are:
  • Ease of coording - how easy do I find it to coord, do I struggle in any way, does it fit neatly into my wardrobe overall
  • Comfort - pretty self explanatory
  • How much did I want it - was it a dream dress, was it something I kept coming back to, was it an impulse buy or something I didn’t expect to want
  • How often do I reach for it - when planning future outfits (without considering specific themes, just regular wear), do I lean towards it or do I avoid it
  • Do I have lots of upcoming coord ideas that I'm excited for - are there lots of unfulfilled coord ideas with it that I can’t wait to try, do I struggle to come up with new things, how heavily do I rely on my coord archive to come up with new outfits.

As a quick disclaimer, the two main pieces that are still on pre-order I’ve had an educated guess for with the points. But everything else was scored based on a gut check reaction, no overthinking, just giving it a number.

The categories above are the sort of things that matter the most to me and that my mind goes towards when trying to pick favourites or put one over another. Because we all know that something can be a dream dress, while a completely different piece can end up being worn tonnes because of comfort. Hence overthinking the ranking and going with a points-based system.

The Top 3

I did not look at the totals before writing the post. So this is as much of a reveal to me as it is to you. I was wondering whether I’d have any pieces that scored a perfect 25/25 and had some guesses as to what they could be. In the end, there were two three-way ties, so there are actually 7 pieces instead of just 3.

  1. Violet Fane Otome Nostalgia skirt = 25
  2. Angelic Pretty Diner Doll JSK = 23
Angelic Pretty Cinema Doll JSK = 23
Haenuli Lovely Memories JSK = 23
  3. Haenuli Whipped Cream Kitty JSK = 22
    BtSSB Polonaise Brillante ~ Ideas of a Maiden ~ JSK = 22
Innocent World Revival Sweet Teddybear JSK = 22

Whilst I did not expect the no 1 full marks piece to be the Otome Nostalgia skirt, I can’t really say that I’m surprised. It really did tick all the boxes, no stretching out the truth. My own prediction was for Cinema Doll to claim that spot and now that I can review the points that I’ve awarded it, I also totally see why it didn’t. To see not one, but two three-way ties was pretty exciting and hand on heart all of these pieces are favourites that I love going back to. And of these seven two made it to the most worn main pieces of 2021, which only sings further praises of how well deserving they are of these spots.

The Bottom 3

As with every ranking, something has to end up at the bottom. And in my case these are:
  1. Dangerous Nude Gobelin bloomers = 7
  2. Alice Girl Velvet Cake OP = 10
  3. Metamorphose Airline JSK = 11

The bloomers are totally deserved. I love them, but they are too small for me. Ideally I should sell them on, I’m holding onto them purely for the aesthetic and because I continue to fool myself that as long as I’m standing up they’re not so bad. But the thing is, they really weren’t made for people with thighs and/or hips, and although they’re not the hardest to coord and I was kind of looking for them, since they’re from my ouji side of the wardrobe, they’re really not the sort of thing that would could do any better than middling in this ranking.

The Alice Girl OP is one that’s still in its pre-order stage, so the points here are guesswork. Based on the shirring and size chart, I estimated the comfort mark to be slap bang in the middle. However, a long sleeve velvet OP with pretty intricate sleeves is neither the most versatile nor the easiest to coord, and although I pre-ordered it, I can’t really say that it was that big of a want. Maybe it’s because it’s still not here with me yet, but compared to the bloomers the score feels less harsh and more ‘that’s just how it is’. I bought it fully knowing that it won’t be the most versatile piece I own, aware of its intrinsic limitations - and that’s ok. Not everything has to work overtime.

Having said this, the dumb Airline JSK being the third bottom does feel like a very harsh ranking. I do love this dress, I love it so much that I’m willing to get extra pieces for it. But whilst it is a dream dress, I can’t imagine myself reaching for it too often, until I get those extra pieces I am quite limited in how much I can do with it, it’s not the easiest thing to coord and the buttons being the only way in and out is too much of a faff on the comfort scale. None of this diminishes my love for the piece, just like with the Alice Girl OP, it is what it is and I love it precisely for that. But because of that it could only do so much. Maybe once I get a few more items it will score better?

Final Words

I did not set out to do this ranking with the purpose of finding items to sell. The Airline JSK is certainly not leaving my possession anytime soon and whilst I am dithering about the Dangerous Nude bloomers, I will hold onto them for a bit longer and see if I can find a way to make them work somehow. But this ranking is certainly clearing up a thing or two in relation to my 2022 goal of sorting out my wardrobe and dedicating certain pieces for seasonal wear. Because whilst it was always clear that a long sleeve velvet OP was going to be an autumn/winter piece only, having this ranking in front of me shows me that some of those top dresses may need to remain as season-less ones. And I can use the rest of the ranking (which I may or may not share in full on my Patreon, I’ll see how I feel) to determine which things might also do better as seasonal items. And I guess congratulations to Violet Fane’s Otome Nostalgia skirt for being the absolute best thing for me in my wardrobe, you keep working hard, girl!

Planning for the Airline JSK

The thing about the Airline JSK is that I knew fully what I was getting myself into. It’s a hard thing to match, though certainly not impossible. But even with my wardrobe, which can be called many things but certainly not small, there is only so much lateral thinking that I can do. I accept that there’d be some things that I simply have to get to make the most out of it - but the key here is that this needs to be done with reason. So let’s plan what I might need to invest in, shall we?

What I have so far?

The good news is that I already have some bits. Not many, but it’s always better than nothing at all. As well as the neutral items, like various builder pieces in white and things in complimentary colours, I also have two bits that were obtained specifically for this dress. The hat I made by hand. Garrison hats like the original matching one for this release are very common in general, we see them in use today, so getting a pattern was super easy. I actually like mine better because it’s full size as opposed to mini, which should make it easier to balance out. The sneakers, on the other hand (and I will not excuse the pun), have sneaked up on me. I think I was just looking for some cute sneakers in general, Vinted presented me with these at a more than reasonable price of like £4, so I felt compelled to. Fortunately there are enough other neon colours to make them work with other things, but that orange was what called out to me and for this dress. Those two pieces have set me up for a really nice start.

Two quite opposite ends of the spectrum here too.

What else do I want?

This is where the boundary blurs a bit. Because again, I can’t necessarily talk about needs, I don’t need anything, I can make do with what I have. We are talking about things that I would like to have. But I also need to be mindful that if something is too specific to this dress, then I will struggle to make it work with other things, so I need to keep things realistic.

Image from Lolibrary.org

The biggest thing that I’d love would be some matching legwear. Metamorphose never released any and the only promotional picture of this colourway that they provided shows it worn with white. That’s neat and great for the job of showcasing the dress, but not very helpful for finding inspiration. To make things extra hard, the world of orange lolita fashion legwear tends to be firmly in the Halloween territory, with a few more rusty/muted options. Nothing quite like this neon here. If I could ever find something in white x orange, something simple, that would sort me out pretty well!

Bad photo editing is bad, but you get the point. If MuFish made these tights in white x orange, that'd be all that I need.

Having said this, my chances of ever finding a piece of legwear like this are slim to none. I have a much better chance of finding some appropriately orange shoes instead. In fact, I know that Irregular Choice has released two different models in a glittery orange that, whilst not quite neon, is bright enough to be able to work with this JSK. Of the two I am leaning more towards the Ban Joes, as they are a slightly lower heel, which hopefully translates to higher comfort of wear. This would be the biggest expense since shoes like these would be the trickiest to find other uses for and other dresses to wear with them, but if I can find them inexpensively enough, I might be able to justify them.

Irregular Choice does re-release the same models frequently, but not always in the same colourways.

A much easier (and cheaper) thing to obtain would be some bracelets. Whilst I have considered wrist cuffs with maybe an accent bow for a second, which could also be made fairly easily, I generally get more use out of my bracelets. Going full white with just pops of this neon orange is the best way to bring colour balance to this JSK, so I could buy some orange beads and make myself a pair of bracelets. And if I feel very crafty, maybe even a choker necklace to go with it. But bracelets seem more pressing.

Some random bracelet I found on Pinterest, I'd make something nicer.

Last thing I was thinking about was some more ‘basic’ piece of headwear. The hat is great, since it’s basically ‘completing the set’, but it won’t allow me to make the most use of such an out-there dress. There’s always the white beret + orange hair clips option, which whilst I may consider, I’m not actually sure I am that into? I dunno, the typically lolita part of me just wants a headbow. Of course that finding one would be nigh impossible, so again I’d have to look into making one that balances out everything that I like with the unusual colours because predictably Lolibrary has nothing even close to what I might have in mind. Which makes this arguably the hardest thing to find since I’m not sure myself what it is that I actually want here.

I'm not sure why, but somehow my brain keeps going back to this headbow as a potential example. Which is ironic because for the versatile white x gold colourway I wear it very little!

Anything else?

If there is an upside to neon orange, then it’s that there is probably a whole bunch of things that I could find offbrand if I really put my mind to it. Neon orange mesh tops seem perfectly plausible to find on Vinted after people were done with raves and festivals, which could provide a bit of variety here. Similarly with jewellery in general, whilst it might not all be neon orange, by expanding into broadly aviation themed things I will no doubt find lots (and not just easyJet memorabilia). But for the time being if I could get even a couple of the things above, it would open up all sorts of coording possibilities. And coording possibilities is what I would like to have to prove to everyone that this dress is not a one trick pony. Because it isn’t. But it’s a point that I can prove better with those few bits than without.

Wardrobe Post 2022

* image by Mimi Jamora

Welcome to the annual tradition of telling myself I won't do a wardrobe post and then do a wardrobe post. This year, thanks to (mostly) doing good on taking pictures as new stuff arrived, it is coming to you very punctually still in January, so that it can also meet Bibliotheca's monthly theme for the month.

2021 saw quite a number of additions, including long time dream dresses, some staple pieces, and plenty of things that I could not have predicted. With each year my wardrobe is getting more rounded and complete, if there ever is such a thing. With each year I also keep saying how there isn't much left that my wardrobe may be lacking in, yet new things still find their way into my wardrobe. I enjoy the diversity of looks that I am able to do, and whilst my moods and inspirations continue to fluctuate, the chances of things leaving my wardrobe are getting slimmer by the minute. Which is cool by me. And if at any point I ever do fall out of love with anything, then it will have served me well.

Once again, I am reusing the template from previous years and am only going to include the details of main pieces. As always, if you want to know where a particular item is from, ask me in whatever way you're comfortable (comment, email, DM via social media etc.). Also, very sadly, once again last year's post's photos have broken - I thought that by switching to a different hosting website I'd avoid that happening, but apparently not. Still, all my previous wardrobe posts are on this blog under the wardrobe post tag, should you want to read through descriptions. And it goes without saying that this post is prety photo heavy!

The elusive one is finally here! The ultimate piece of nonsense that we will ever see - I guess until I get the navy one and can do Ryanair vs easyJet stuff.

It's my cheapest main piece and whilst a little on the short side for my current preferences, I still love it.

Baroque x Sakizo Repose of Queen Teatime Dress set with overskirt (not pictured)
I have very fond memories modelling this at Dream Masquerade Carnival shortly after my own set arrived. This print is so lush and I love Sakizo's work!

BtSSB Soirée of the Beginning of My Memories JSK I
The last thing I bought in 2020 and a long time on-again-off-again wishlist piece - in a colourway I didn't anticipate myself getting, but which I actually love more. Miss Wannabe Scarlett O'Hara is mine now.

The first piece I bought directly from brand in the Kanazawa branch. It was a pretty literal 'shut up and take my money' kind of situation.

Alice and the Pirates Rosier Fleur JSK
I'm not sure whether it's the original or the re-release, though I feel like it might be the original. Either way, it's a stunning piece that pictures don't do justice.

Angelic Pretty Cinema Doll JSK (2018 MTO)
I am so glad I jumped on this MTO, this dress is absolutely stunning and I love it with all my heart. Thank you, AP, for not changing the fabric on this one.

Bought this to use as an underskirt, but I've actually been using it on its own a lot. It's a great piece for layering of all sorts, if you can, I recommend getting it.

Fanplusfriend Alice Knight shorts
Simple, basic, comfortable - yeah, they may not be the statement piece of my ouji wardrobe, but they're definitely pulling their weight.

This gets far more wear for work than in Lolita coords. Although as with any tiered cotton skirt, the ironing/steaming is a chore.

Another fantastic casual piece. As the cut is very classic A-line, it sometimes translates as more otome than lolita, but I don’t care, this is gorgeous. And did you know that the lining is also printed? That’s a detail I never knew I needed, but appreciate nonetheless!

Dangerous Nude Gobelin bloomers
Perfect bloomers don't exi... Nope, they do! Well, maybe if they were just a smidge bigger... Then they'd be perfect. But they're not far from it now!

Innocent World Georges Rose JSK
Promise I ironed it, it just wrinkles like crazy. It's a great fancy, but still sort of blending in kind of piece. Although I must say, I do wish Innocent World learned how to cut for people with actual boobs.

That gobelin fabric is the most gorgeous thing ever. And I love all the pops of sax on this colourway!

Angelic Pretty Flower Garden JSK
After being on and off my wishlist for a while, I found it for a price that was too good to say no to. It sticks out in my collection like a sore thumb and I still love it.

Victorian Maiden Shirring Frill JSK
My first ever Victorian Maiden piece, which I completely adore. Would love to own this in that blue gingham too, if I ever could.

Violet Fane Otome Nostalgia skirt
Dare I say that this design won the lolita Internet in 2020? It's amazing and it literally evokes all kinds of nostalgia within my heart.

Technically this probably isn't really lolita. Nonetheless, this is a great skirt and Innocent World White deserves to be included, especially as I've gone to the trouble of photographing all my completely offbrand bits too.

Chrysanthemum's Concerto Lost in the Garden of Eden JSK
I was after a comfortable red gingham dress and my friend did a reservation exactly at the right time. This is everything I ever wanted in a gingham dress and more.

Bodyline L262 (altered)
Here is the very first Lolita dress I ever bought and I still love it. It's a very versatile piece and looks way nicer than you'd expect from Bodyline.

Metamorphose Polka Dots Tiered skirt
Yes, I know that I have a dress that’s basically the same thing. But this is Meta and was cheap, how could I have said no?

HeartE tartan JSK.
I don't know the official name of it. This piece is one of my most comfortable and I'm sad to have gotten into HeartE just before they closed. It always surprises me how many people compliment this dress in particular, since it's such a simple design that I wear more casually than in proper lolita ways
(especially as it's a touch short for lolita).

Juliette et Justine La Couronne Classique Robe
Also my first JetJ piece. After some time of going back to the Wunderwelt listing I realised how uset I'd be if this sold out, so I got it. And I'm very glad that I did, this will be great to just throw on!

Metamorphose x Kamen Rider Gold Braid Tuck Pinafore JSK
A long time dream dress that I was finally able to get in 2020. It's so understated and full of detail, I'm over the moon to have it!

Mary Magdalene Deborah Doll JSK
I would love to be able to have some confirmation as to which release it is. My guess is that it's the original, since the 'wine' colourway of the re-release is much more plum on the stock photo. I snagged it for a pretty good price too, which I'm extra pleased with because Mary Magdalene really is worth the prices it goes for second hand.

You may think it’s an exaggeration, but this OP has changed my life. It’s comfortable, it’s versatile thanks to the detachable collar and cuffs, and it’s incredibly flattering. A firm favourite.

Grove Deer Moon of Eternal Day OP
When a dress is £20 off Xianyu, it really is worth the risk. And this one was!

Alice and the Pirates Sheherazade ~ One Thousand and One Nights ~ JSK I
Another one where I find the cut extremely flattering on me. More of this kind of cuts, please! But without the weird back bow, just keep it simple, AatP.

This is the most seasonal print I envision myself getting. Love it to bits, it's the best and basically wear the crap out of it each December. It's also super sturdy and warm as it's two layers of cotton.

The only mint piece in my collection, although it is a bluish mint. I've ended up getting a fair few pieces to match just this, but it's been totally worth it.

Metamorphose Bubble Bath skirt
I’ve no idea how it took me so long to discover this print. I’m simply grateful that once I did, I was able to find it so quickly. It’s CATS TAKING A BATH, how can I not love it?!

Amazing as an underskirt, great as a summer skirt, great for layering... How do these random impulse buys end up working so well for me?

A long-standing dream dress that's finally mine. I love IW's simple take on sweet lolita! There were plenty of times when I almost gave in and bought it in brown, but I'm glad I didn't, it was 100% worth the wait.

Haenuli Lovely Memories JSK
That lace is everything! I absolutely love this dress and feel so elegant in it.

Lord, the skirt on this one never ends, which is painfuly obvious when ironing/steaming! But it's also such a comfortable and versatile dress, so I will live with the pain.

Bodyline L249 JSK
Second lolita dress I ever bought and while I still adore it, it is a touch short. Though in 2020 I finally figured out a good way around that, so I look forward to this new lease of life for this dress.

Lady Sloth/Casual Sloth Look at My Dreamy Sky - Day OP
Although it's from the casual range, it still works with lolita. This has been worn to a wedding, as well as just out and about, so even though it's from the casual range, it's still fancy enough if you need it.

Haenuli Whipped Cream Kitty JSK
This was a present from my ex-boyfriend for graduating with a 2:1. It has a matching waist ribbon, but I couldn't be bother to dig it out just for the photo as I don't wear it very often (if ever).

BtSSB Secret AIR MAIL from Sweet Kitty JSK
The kitties are adorable, I can't believe it took me this long to realise how good this print is, even though I remember it coming out.

Angelic Pretty Crystal Dream Carnival Tiered JSK
This was an instant dream dress, but the damn thing appeared just after I spent all my savings on Fantasy Theater. I was lucky to get it later without selling a kidney.

This is also a piece that I wear a lot to work. The print always gets noticed and complimented a lot. It's also the skirt I wear when travelling, since it's light and means I can wear my petticoat instead of trying to pack it. So far it's been to 7 countries, if we include its country of origin. And I'm sure it will see more.

Mary Magdalene Paulina JSK
My namesake and ultimate dream dress. You can pry that from my cold, dead fingers, I ain't ever getting rid of this! Everything about this dress is simply perfect to me.

Resailan Jewelry Box JSK I (altered)
I love this print, but the original cut wasn't working for me, so I had it altered. Now it's a shape that flatters me more and while I'd still change a few bits, I can at least wear it and feel good about myself.

Dear Celine Magic Book OP
This is such a great print. Whilst I got it with the intention of wearing it more casually, it just hasn't quite happened - but the potential is there!

My first and only pair of ouji shorts. Meta wins the game with so many detachable pieces. Although Meta always wins the game in my eyes.

After Midnight The First Semester JSK
This cut is the best: super comfy and super flattering. Definitely want more green in my wardrobe - and more underbust (or near underbust) cuts!

BtSSB Polonaise Brillante ~ Ideas of a Maiden ~ Apron JSK
This was an insta-dream dress, Baby did so well capturing the essence and detail of Polish national costume and I pretty literally cried when I finally got my hands on it at BtSSB Osaka. The staff must’ve thought I was a bit mad, but I don’t care, this is my child and I can’t wait to keep evolving and upping the Polish vibes in my coords with this!

L'Esprit de la Noblesse La Bibliotheque JSK
This design stole my heart at first sight and the dress then conquered it the moment I put it on. I really want more from L'Esprit de la Noblesse now!

My first gothic piece (despite the very sweet name). Excuse the heavy editing, I wanted to showcase some of that flocked detail. The gold specks is actually glitter. This looks much better in movement, so I recommend checking out the lookbook video I did with this dress.

Fanplusfriend Alice Knight shorts
Exactly the same as the ones in ivory. Though by virtue of being back, they may potentially get a bit less wear.

Haenuli Just One Bite JSK (Jacquard)
Although not the first gothic dress I purchased, this was the first one I couldn’t get out of my head. And I’m so happy that I was able to get it during Haenuli’s Farewell Reservations, it’s such a stunning piece.
