March Coords Roundup

March has somehow come and gone. Started out still quite wintery and ended up nice and spring-like, so I guess all the weather summoning I did through some of these outfits has worked.

Coord 1: Sepia Tones

| Violet Fane Otome Nostalgia skirt | Axes Femme top | Innocent World Lauretta OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | Cutie Creator headbow | offbrand earrings and necklace | Amadea Kingdom The Adventurer D4 brooch | Latte Galaxy brooch | Dalao Home wig |

Sometimes it still takes me aback how much of a difference a wig makes.

Love me some novelty brooches.

I was able to kick off the month with a coord right on day one, as well as start with one for the No Buy Support challenge. Read more about the outfit here.

Coord 2: Summoning Spring

| BtSSB Polonaise Brillante ~ Ideas of a Maiden ~ JSK and OTKs | A.R.W. blouse | Pinky Girls cardigan | BtSSB Dreaming Sherbet skirt as an underskirt | Irregular Choice Total Freedom shoes | Hello Crumpet Kukuryku brooch | everything else is offbrand |

You can juuust about make out the green barrette at the back there.

His name is Robert.

So, I got this cardigan because it was inexpensive and I wanted to introduce a spot of yellow to my collection. I was also able to snag this brooch after missing out on it during the first release. The rest simply had to happen and whilst I went with simpler styling (i.e. you can only just about see the barrette at the back of my head), this is still a look I am very pleased with. The yellow lifts the colours in this print up and the rooster is a perfect accompaniment to the Polish print. At that point I was also sick of constantly feeling cold (in fact my hands were still freezing as I was working in this), but hopefully the coord would have been spring-like enough to draw out some at least milder weather and ideally some actually warm weather.

Coord 3: Town in Spring

| Angelic Pretty Royal Unicorn Switching JSK | A.R.W. blouse | Innocent World Rose Lace Millefeuille bolero | AatP Lace-Up Ribbon OTKs | offbrand shoes, hair clips and necklace | Amor Barocco pin | Fluffy Tori Tea Party Hard pin |

After trying bubble braids with my own hair, I can tell you that it looks nicer with wig, they just have more hair for that.

Forever tea partying hard.

My spring summoning must have worked because the next day the sun came out and when it wasn’t windy, it was even pretty warm. So I dressed up to go to town and balanced the need for comfort (shoes, simple hair, minimum accessories) with the seasonal vibes and colours. The light greens worked surprisingly well with the pale blue tones of this dress. Between feeling great in this outfit and the sunny weather, I ended up treating myself probably a little bit too much, but hell, it’s been a tough week emotionally, so I deserved those treats.

Coord 4: Kind of Ascot

| Mary Magdalene Paulina JSK | Lady Sloth Glitter Mesh blouse | Angelic Pretty Musee du Chocolat OTKs | Deary shoes | vintage hat, gloves, earrings and brooch |

You know, time sometimes works wonders because I do feel less critical of this coord now than I was at the time.

A lady always matches her gloves to her hat.

The weekend prior to this I got this hat from a charity shop and have been looking at ways of using it. It is more 80s Princess Diana inspired than anything else, but the giant bow made me think that it could fit with lolita so well. Whilst I can’t say that I am absolutely 100% happy with the outcome, this is once again down to styling rather than the components themselves. I did deliberately aim for something slightly more elegant woman in the 1980s with the jewellery choices, but I think that vibe gets a bit lost without at least more 1980s makeup (and ideally hair too). And maybe in the end this wasn’t really the dress to use it with. But having done the look, I do like what it was trying to do and it was a nice balance between fancy and toned down for a work from home Friday. So yeah, a work in progress, but I’m all about sharing those too and normalising not being 100% perfect 100% of the time.

Coord 5: Feeling Cool

| Violet Fane Otome Nostalgia skirt | Angelic Pretty Whip Girl cutsew | Angelic Pretty Sugar Ribbon OTKs | offbrand shoes, jacket and hair clip | belt from Lady Sloth’s Look at My Dreamy Sky OP | Chocomint ring | Fluffy Tori pin | Dear Celine badge |

A ponytail and the right glasses can turn a look.

May the power of bows compel you!

The other outfit from the No Buy Support Challenge for this month. Once again, more details in that post.

Coord 6: Librarian on a Day Off

| Lady Sloth Look at My Dreamy Sky casual OP | A.R.W. bolero | Violet Fane Antiquite tights | offbrand earrings | Summer Tales Boutique necklace | Latte Galaxy brooch |

Balancing the desire to dress up and be cute with the desire to be comfy, the following day I landed on this low-key coord. I was drawing inspiration from mori-kei colour palette and going for a sort of bookish, librarian-esque vibe with the quirky accessories. Later that day I even lit a candle that smells like an old library to add to the vibes. Since the day was very chill and I did little besides enjoying the moment, I didn’t bother with more than just a mirror selfie or pretending like shoes or hair accessories ever happened. (Everything else did happen though.)

Coord 7: Coord Telephone

| Metamorphose Polka Dots Shirring Pinafore JSK | Ank Rouge cutsew | Angelic Pretty Wrapping Cherry socks | offbrand shoes and beret | Promised Land Creations necklace | Innocent World Strawberry Fields wrist cuffs | handmade bracelets | Manda Rin Designs brooches |

One of the best times these rope curls have come out.

Innocent World does lace like few others do.

Some time ago my Discord server had a Coord Telephone thread, where each consecutive person picked one item for a person until a completed coord was created. With a few small tweaks (my own hair instead of a wig and the additions of hand accessories and brooches) this is it. I wouldn’t have picked the black shoes to go with this whole thing, but with those couple of additions having the colour include three colours instead of two ends up nicely balanced. I also feel that the heels and the colour scheme leans into that sweet/classic territory, hence my choice of brooches and bracelets together with the wrist cuffs. Cute and comfortable, great for a working Monday - big thanks to everyone in my Discord server who contributed to this!

Coord 8-10: Going Away

| Violet Fane Charming Town skirt | A.R.W. blouse | Fi.n.t. cardigan | Violet Fane Antiquite tights | offbrand shoes and barrette | Mademoiselle Boutique necklace | The Grand Embassy badge | Violet Fane Violet’s Tea Room brooch |

Not sure why the glowy halo, but sometimes your phone just decides that your selfie needs it.

Love the details on this print so much.

Day 2: with an Axes Femme cutsew, A.R.W. bolero, Paints and Teawater brooch, and an offbrand beret and necklace.

Day 3: with a Peppermint Fox broocch.

I was going away for a weekend at my parents’ and since the weather forecast was optimistic, I not only dressed up for the trip, but the whole weekend. The first one for travelling itself did get modified with a different pair of shoes later, as I didn’t want to pack an extra one just for a weekend. And going with spring colours to still coax that spring weather out of its winter slumber - give me all the greens! The other two use the same tights and a pair of brown Oxfords, with everything else being just variations of each other. You don’t need a lot for a weekend and to me these coords are different enough from each other whilst still minimising how much needs to be packed.

Coord 11: Spring Gingham

| Haenuli Whipped Cream Kitty JSK | Cat Tea Party blouse | Angelic Pretty Twinkle Star socks | Irregular Choice shoes | Chrysanthemum Concerto Lost in the Garden of Eden headbow | offbrand hair clips and necklace | Tea and Paintwater brooch | Hello Crumpet Kukuryku brooch | handmade bracelets | Banned Retro Bella belt |

Balancing out a headeating headbow can be tricky sometimes, but I feel like these two small ponytails behind it did the trick.

My outfit was channelling the energy of this kitty in particular.

Other than the weekend at my parents’, I've gone through my whole week off without frilling once. This coord idea has been in my head literally since January and I’ve been waiting for some warm enough weather to wear it. The forecast has been threatening me with going colder again, so it was now or never. It came out pretty much just how I envisioned it. And it was nice to dress up without anything in particular planned for the day, just for myself and my own fun. I’d been missing that a bit lately, which made a big difference in my mood. Nothing like putting on a favourite dress for lifting one’s spirit.

*~*~*~*

Coord 12: Back to Work

| Metamorphose Bubble Bath skirt | Madillustration brooch | Sweet Dolly House necklace and ring | handmade bracelets | everything else is offbrand |

Wow, hair, why so messy?

These sneakers were one of my best Vinted finds. And they get a detail shot to prove that both lavender and mint (as well as pink) feature on them.

Having hit my groove on the Sunday before, I couldn't resist dressing up for the first day back. It;s hardly ever fun going back to work straight after some time off, so every little helps. Carrying on with the theme of comfort and spring vibes I arrived at this. Since it already got a bit chilly, I also wore my AP cutsew cardigan over it. Apparently, for the unsporty person that I am, those pastel sporty-ish vibes are really agreeing with me right now.

*~*~*~*

I am finishing the month feeling like I haven’t worn lolita as often as I would’ve liked. All the ideas that I have that get me excited to wear them out are on the fancier side, which gets disrupted by a lack of either time (during work days) or motivation (on other days). It feels like I’ve fallen into a rut with my style and am not sure how I want to look like these days. There are plenty of looks in this post that I was genuinely pleased with, so I should be focusing on that, as well as stay in the moment a bit more. This last coord featured here helped a little with getting the excitement back, so hopefully as we advance through spring into summer those ideas will start clarifying a bit more.

1 Dress 5 Looks Take 57

The Dumb Airline Dress. That’s its official title. The world thinks that it’s a one trick pony, especially in this colourway. And I am here to prove all of them wrong. Some of that I started last month - and some you’re about to see below.

Look 1: Meet Me at the Arcade

| offbrand jacket, socks and hair clips | Irregular Choice High Score shoes | tie from the dress to be used as a headband | Fluffy Tori pin | Love from the North pin | Chocomint ring | Twinkle Kitty Boutique ring |

Let’s make one thing clear, the only way I would actually wear this to an arcade would be for an aesthetic photoshoot. These shoes are not made for gaming, they are made for looking. Having said this, I love how this outfit exudes that cool kid at the arcade vibe - all that’s missing is popping bubblegum balloons!

Look 2: Simply Sporty

| offbrand top, socks, sneakers and hair clip | bow from Lady Sloth’s Winter Spices skirt | Cutie Creator wrist cuffs | Bubblegum Emporium necklace |

Or as sporty as lolita could get. But this is definitely more like something that I would actually wear to an arcade to play rhythm games in: comfy sneakers, a simple top, very few accessories, everything is easy to maintain (i.e. can just be thrown into the washing machine). I used the necklace to try to pull in some of the lavenders from the sneakers and while I like it as a statement piece, I would like to find a way to add a little bit more lavender to this coord. At the same time I didn’t want to overwhelm it with things since it’s supposed to be practical enough for action lolita.

Look 3: Fasten Your Seatbelts

| Innocent World blouse | Angelic Pretty Lovely Ribbon OTKs | offbrand boots | handmade hat |

Otherwise known as the quintessential look for which this dress was designed. Whilst I would like to add one or two more accessories, currently I don’t have much that fits this theme. Still, between the pops of orange and the different textures I don’t actually think that it looks that bare. This is one of those coords where, again, styling would help tie it together a bit more.

Look 4: Space Odyssey

| Lady Sloth Glitter Mesh blouse | Angelic Pretty Lovely Ribbon OTKs | offbrand jacket and boots | Boguta underskirt | Haruhi Clover headbow | Chocomint hair clip | Innocent World Moon and Star Pearl necklace | Twinkle Kitty Boutique ring |

Also known as cabin crew but in space. An aeroplane and a rocket aren’t that different in principle, so I wanted to make a more uchuu-kei leaning outfit with all the starry and space themes I could. It’s… a bit all over the place, I admit, but I don’t think it’s so in a bad way? Another one where the hair and makeup would do some heavy lifting, but I have faith for this.

Look 5: A Pop of Larme

| Lazy Oaf cutsew | Angelic Pretty Colourful Polkadot OTKs | Irregular Choice Total Freedom shoes | offbrand beret | Larme x Eat Me hair tie | Big Pink Boutique earrings | Rose Marie Seoir necklace | Star Glazed Delights ring | Lady Sloth brooch | Bibelot Rose badge |

Yes, a fifth one. Because I can, it’s my blog and I make the rules. And I really am hell bent on proving a point that this JSK is more versatile than people give it credit for. At this point a larme look is almost just as obligatory as an OTT one. Although I’ll admit that all I had noted down were the top and shoes combo - the rest happened very organically. Especially the socks, since my first thought was to go with white fishnets, but they are a nightmare to photograph in flatlays. These end up working surprisingly well, so I made black feature a bit more throughout the outfit and this is where it ended up at.

Is this everything that I could possibly do with this dress? Definitely not! At the back of my mind I also had ideas for coording this JSK with sax blue, potentially black, maybe even lavender… I know, I better steady myself there! And in the meantime I’m still accumulating more bits that will go specifically with this dress, jumping at opportunities whenever I see them. That’s probably the most fun part, pushing the limits of this supposedly limiting design and surprising even myself at what else is possible.

Pet Peeve and a Petty Rant about Bustles

For the most part I try to avoid projecting needless negativity out there. It accomplishes nothing and I have enough private channels to vent things. Sometimes, however, none of those hit the spot and that is when writing a petty post turns at least slightly therapeutic.

One of my bigger pet peeves in lolita fashion is the use of bustles, particularly back bustles. I currently own one dress that has a front bustle and one that has side ones, as well as used to own one dress with a back bustle. So a dislike of bustles may seem odd, considering how I own pieces with them, but in all of those cases it was a matter of everything else working hard enough to make me forgive the bustle. Because every other time as soon as I see a bustle on a dress, I am immediately turned off unless it is a truly exceptional design overall - and here is why.

1. Why tho?

For the most part I feel that over half of bustled dress designs are done with no rhyme or reason to it. And it breaks my heart a little to say that Meta is one of the worst offenders here. I can understand how a bustle fits into an overall quite classic and elegant design, such as Marguerite Wreath JSK or even something wa-themed like the Snowy Rabbit Bustle Lace Up JSK. But why is there a bustle on their Marine Bear JSK? Or on the Patissier in the Forest JSKs? Or on the Vintage Fruit JSK? Why? None of those prints are aiming for the sort of classic elegance where such a rich design feature would naturally fit into it, it makes no sense to me at all.

The top designs make far more sense with bustles than the bottom ones.

2. Feels lazy

The point above leads me to this one: in many cases a bustle feels like a lazy copout at best and a blatant attempt at cost-cutting at worst. This is particularly obvious in the examples from Meta I’ve given, where the themes of the print and the overall feel of the design is far removed from what we’d associate a bustle with. There is no need for it thematically and whilst in practice adding a bustle can be one way to alter a dress to be larger with limited fabric, this is how those dresses are brand new. Meta’s shirring is always generous enough to not need inserting a plain fabric instead of carrying on with the printed one to accommodate the full range of sizes that fit within that stretch. Except for cutting costs reasons. Or because at some point in the process someone decided that the overall look was too simple, so a bustle could be easily added without messing with the whole design, especially if it was at the back. That just reads as lazy and cheapskate-ish to me.

These cuts are so simple that the bustle is almost the only structural detail there. And since it doesn't fit the theme, the only reason for it to be there seems to be to save on having to buy more of the printed fabric.

3. What about maintenance

Ok, this one is admittedly a bit more petty, but I find the maintenance of bustles practically a bit too much. It’s not so bad these days with most bustles being made out of polyester chiffon and therefore not creasing as easily. However, my first and only back bustle was a Shirring Princess JSK, where the bustle was cotton. Ironing that was not fun and it never lasted long. And let’s be honest, just because polyester chiffon is more crease resistant, it’s not fully crease repellent. Extended improper storage could easily cause some creases and because of the tiered nature of bustles, ironing those is fiddly (though with polyester chiffon you have to use a garment steamer, which also not everyone owns). Unless such a design feature is added to a dress which is already a bit more OTT and therefore prepares its owner for a bit more upkeep, it could be a chore for something that should have been a bit easier to throw on for regular wear.

Each of these could've easily been worn quite casually - were it not for the fancy bustle that needs extra ironing after every time you sit down.

In other words, if brands, especially Meta, could just stop adding a bustle to everything that they can think of, then that would be great, thanks.

No Buy Support Wardrobe Challenge: Favourite Piece 2 Ways

Carrying on with the No Buy Support challenge, this time by going back to where the challenge should have started: to the favourite piece.

Selecting a favourite piece was more of a challenge than coming up with multiple looks for it, but since it’s not long that I’d gone and ranked all of the main pieces I own, it made for a far easier selection time. Otome Nostalgia is a great piece with so many possibilities that I am yet to explore, plus it’s something that’s easy to wear casually and regardless of my energy levels.

Coord 1: Sepia Tones

| Violet Fane Otome Nostalgia skirt | Axes Femme top | Innocent World Lauretta OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | Cutie Creator headbow | offbrand earrings and necklace | Amadea Kingdom The Adventurer D4 brooch | Latte Galaxy brooch | Dalao Home wig |

It felt like a while since I wore wig for a whole day, that was actually a lot.

Repping indie brands' brooches.

The first idea was to go for something actually pretty muted and sort of leaning into the nostalgic retro-ish vibes. It mostly started with the top, as I am on a mini-mission to find ways to wear it more. From there I leaned in to the browns all over, resulting in a somewhat of an overall sepia tone vibe to the look.

Except that part of me could resist adding a couple of tiny touches of blue. It started with the D4 brooch, since the mauve pinks in there are a similar tone to the top, as well as work with the skirt. But it’s the blue of that dice in the design that really popped and then I looked for a couple of other blue bits to throw in the mix too. Those ended to be another brooch and a pair of earrings (though they’re semi-opaque, so somehow the light ate all the blue hues from the plastic, but trust me that they are blue)., as well as whatever is already in the print.

Since it was a work from home day, I kept everything pretty simple. Whilst I ended up wearing a wig, this was entirely for lazy reasons as I couldn’t be bothered to figure out a hair situation or commit the time to then do the styling. Why make your life harder when a wig can make it easier? Same with makeup, just three things to stop my face from looking too washed out.

This turned out to be a really cute coord that I like a lot. I don’t want to sound like I don’t or like it needs improvements - I simply would like to try a version of it in the future that includes a few more of those blues somewhere, to see what that would look like. So not a version 2.0, more like a first cousin to this one.

Coord 2: Feeling Cool

| Violet Fane Otome Nostalgia skirt | Angelic Pretty Whip Girl cutsew | Angelic Pretty Sugar Ribbon OTKs | offbrand shoes, jacket and hair clip | belt from Lady Sloth’s Look at My Dreamy Sky OP | Chocomint ring | Fluffy Tori pin | Dear Celine badge |

It's weird how much of a difference just a little bit of makeup makes. I genuinely disliked the look until I put some on my face.

Not that I'd ever punch anyone, let alone with this ring on. But it made me feel even more cool to do the detail shot like that.

What started as a slightly differently themed outfit back in the 1 Dress 4 Looks Take 49 post has ended up getting a more street style twist for the practical reason of going out to get groceries. For once the process was pretty gradual and traceable too. It started with the sneakers, just to see if they would match. Then once they were on I wondered whether to stick with the belt that came with the skirt or swap it out. After that I knew that this needed the denim jacket. Once all of that was on, I was actually unconvinced - up until I put my hair up in a ponytail and then did some light makeup. Only after all of those steps were completed, I felt like the outfit fell together. This is often what I mean when I say that the styling fails the look or that it can pull it together.

Firstly, pulling the blues out of the print was so much fun, I really like how that came out. This is a colour palette for this skirt that I would like to revisit in slightly different styles in the future, it has lots of potential for all sorts of cute looks that compliment the print. Secondly, I love how the neon orange of the sneakers actually ends up working with the orange tones of the print. It’s nice when a practical requirement like that (since I went grocery shopping in this and needed to be comfortable) still supports the look. Thirdly, adding those more 90s vibes to a print referencing more of the 80s nostalgia simply gave me a lot of joy! It’s fun, it’s playful, it’s saying that you can do your own thing with the clothes that you own.

Admittedly, pretty much all of the accessories ended up being taken off very quickly, the ring because I didn’t think it would’ve been sensible for a supermarket trip and the pins because I needed the jacket for doing some flatlays. But the rest of the outfit stayed on for all the rest of the day. Cutsews and fully shirred skirts are super comfy, there was no reason to change out of that.

Final words

Of course that there is plenty more that I could’ve done with this skirt - that much is undeniable. We all know it. But since I own a lot of clothes that need wearing, my priority was that rather than putting together more looks just for this one post. Otome Nostalgia isn’t leaving my wardrobe anytime soon, so there will be lots still to come with it over the years, different colour combinations and themes imposed on it. The two coords featured here are just where my mood took me in March.

Oldschool lolita vs the 'old money'

Whoosh, life’s kicking my butt and I have so many thoughts, but so little energy to express them. So stealing time when I can here is a write-up of some of those thoughts that’s slightly salty at both sides.

Image by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels.com

Two things have happened within the last week or so: someone has made a TikTok to the extent of ‘why would BtSSB release their original early designs when they can do more of the super OTT contemporary ones’, then later I finally caught up on a video by Mina Lee, a creator whose video essays I enjoy, about the ‘old money aesthetic’. Much of my feelings that stemmed from the first one were already within me prior to even seeing the TikTok (which has since been taken down), however watching Mina’s video has helped clarify and name some of what I was feeling about the discourse at large.

As someone who doesn’t wear oldschool lolita and was not into the fashion when that was the dominant look, I don’t hold that many opinions about it. It’s not my cup of tea, so if a particular piece or outfit doesn’t appeal to me I respectfully move along. By virtue of when my journey with lolita started I’m also somewhere in between the ‘oldschool is the best, most practical, comfortable and highest quality’ and the ‘oldschool is dated and no different in spirit than wearing 40s fashion in 2022’ debate. Whilst I know people, both personally and overall, who really love that time of lolita fashion, enabling me to hear and understand their point of view, equally I like to think that I am relatively up to date with the current trends and opinions within our community, despite doing mostly my own thing.

Because of being in this position, observing the various discussions that stir up around the topic of oldschool lolita can feel like being the devil’s advocate for both. On the one hand, I understand the frustration of those oldschool lolitas who have lovingly looked through old magazines and are actively aiming to emulate the look of the early 2000s with the current trends of mixing some parts of the aesthetic with completely modern styling (particularly makeup). At the same time, I’m all for people taking what they like about a look, such as the colour palette and overall feel, and adding their own thing to it, whether it be the style of makeup they feel more comfortable in or accessories that were easier/quicker/cheaper to obtain that still give them the look they wanted. Like with so much in lolita fashion, most arguments or dissatisfactions boil down to the labels applied, with the odd sprinkling of airing out personal frustrations, hopefully in private settings.

That TikTok I mentioned? Yeah, I also don’t personally care for designs like the Shirring Babydoll JSK. Does that mean that the Dear Rose JSK is any more valid or that BtSSB should only focus on one style or the other? Absolutely not. The majority of our community, particularly those who have been active in it for a few years, and especially those who got to be active before the pandemic, understand that brands are allowed to try a variety of things, always have been, and won’t stop doing so anytime soon. This may sometimes be controversial in the ‘is this still lolita’ way (like AP’s Milkshake series), but when those concerns don’t enter the equation, what a brand releases isn’t really our business to question, we can merely make our opinions heard as consumers by either buying those or not.

BtSSB's Shirring Babydoll JSK re-release vs Dear Rose JSK.

However, between the comments specific to the video, pointing out how not understanding the above point is a clear sign that the creator’s own knowledge of the fashion is very limited and severely based on what is the dominant look now, and the more generic ones like those about ‘inauthentic’ makeup or the desire for oldschool-inspired pieces to stop because they do not adhere to the original principles of the fashion (higher quality materials, simpler designs, a particular way of putting them together etc.), the lolita community is coming across as a bit too conservative at times. Once I saw Mina’s video about the ‘old money’ aesthetic, all of those comments immediately made sense to me in the context of oldschool lolita acting like the old money vs the nouveau riche.

For one, despite a dominant look that we can confidently identify as oldschool lolita, there are plenty of ideas about it that are given as if no other look of lolita existed simultaneously. This is one that Bunny Valentine broke down very well in her most recent post, which I also recommend you check out. But going beyond what is oldschool and what isn’t, it’s the difference in attitudes and the parallels between the two seemingly unrelated worlds that really made me feel as if we’ve entered the stage when we can even talk about the OG oldschoolers as ‘old money’. Anyone can get rich, but the old money is inherited along with a set of values and expected behaviours, as well as a heavily coded lifestyle that those on the inside absorb by osmosis, while to the outsiders it becomes a thick book of petty rules. How different is that from lolita, where those in the early days worked hard to learn and establish the rules, who are now watching the newcomers come in to a ready made cushy place full of options, then listen to those same newcomers either shout about the superiority of cheaply made lower quality items over branded or indie pieces or to the disses thrown at the look that isn’t current? How different is our ‘admiring the models and designers vs admiring the TikTokers/YouTubers/social media lolitas’ to their ‘admiring people of this heritage with years of building their empires vs admiring celebrities, influencers and other fast-made personalities’?

When ‘old money’ became a look, first understood as preppy, which anyone could simply purchase once average household disposable income in the global North increased in the 1980s, the actual ‘old money’ probably too felt some resentment. Something that they have cultivated and that was part of their identity has now become a commodity that anyone could purchase and pretend like they were something they were not. Of course, that never erased the difference between the two, socioeconomic differences still dictated what label the polo shirts were and what access to other resources people had. Nonetheless as disposable income grew on average and as other means of success allowed those from other backgrounds to attain riches quickly, the wealth of the old money was reduced from an unattainable goal to just an aesthetic. Even if those who always belonged to it retained their air of superiority and still kept their noses stuck up high.

To me lolita fashion, as seen from the way the community approaches oldschool, sometimes feels the same. Oldschool lolita comes with a set of values, an attitude that favours the slow ways of obtaining pieces and knowledge of what makes something lolita and what doesn’t. From that point of view the more fast-fashion-like instant accessibility of not only the learning resources, but the clothes themselves can feel like the nouveau riche of lolita fashion are reducing those values to an aesthetic that can be adopted and then discarded. But just like those embracing the preppy styles or getting inspired by the ‘old money’ aesthetic don’t have to actually desire to be a part of that world or culture, neither do newer lolitas who enjoy the look of oldschool lolita style clothing. Yes, it would probably be more accurate if they tagged some of those looks with a more generic ‘lolita fashion’ rather than ‘oldschool lolita’ - but people mistag things all the time, with more or less upsetting results. At the end of the day, the resources to learn more about that style remain available to those who truly wish to wear that look and adopt it as their style. You can take a horse to water and all that.

Obligatory cheesy catchphrase that matches the tone of what I'm trying to say.
Image by Meruyert Gonullu from Pexels.com

Is all this just another rant to say ‘let’s not be elitist, but also let’s not shove everything into the lolita fashion bag even if it doesn’t fit’? Not quite. If anything, then for once I am standing with those newer lolitas and asking that our resident oldtimers and experts extend a bit of understanding for wanting to create their own look based off a pre-existing one and for enjoying the fashion in their way. There is certainly room to be salty about mistagged things and definitely legitimate reason to be frustrated with people like that TikToker who try to pass off their preferences as a justifiable dissatisfaction with a brand catering to more than just their favourite look. But there is also plenty of space within our fashion to grow and change, to create new looks, push the limits, and still exist without raining on anyone else’s parade. And considering how at the very least we can say that our OG oldschoolers haven’t built their legacy on active oppression and exploitation of others, like all of the ‘old money’ wealthy have, then we’re really better off enjoying our version of the ‘new money’. They help to keep this fashion alive and we can support them by pointing to further resources and focusing on the good that they can offer to foster a growth mindset instead of further perpetrating silly divisions. Even if that means doing certain things harmlessly ‘wrong’, like having too modern of a makeup with an older style of this fashion.
