January Coords Roundup

In contrast to January 2024, January 2025 has flown by. None of the dread of the month dragging – but in exchange for all of the panic that I don’t have enough time for everything (I’ve been consumed by crafting and a secret project).

*~*~*~*
Coord 1: Small Errands

| Metamorphose Lovely Forest skirt | Axes Femme cutsew | Snag tights | Laura Ashley shoes | Cutie Creator Maiden’s Prayer headbow | offbrand studs | vintage brooch |

Kicking the year off with the usual dose of very lazy styling.

Simple styling relies on the right statement accessory imo.

Happy New Year! Whilst my January 1st was way more underdressed than this, on January 2nd I made it a point to dress up. Sadly, my original idea didn’t quite work, but thankfully I could salvage most of the coord by just swapping out the main piece. This coord had such WFH vibes, even though I was still on annual leave, that it convinced me that it was a Tuesday! It probably didn’t help that I was also going to the supermarket and doing a lot of small computer-based chores using my work desk. But oh well, let this be the auspicious thing that gets me to dress up cute for working from home all over 2025!

Coord 2: WFH 2025

| Violet Fane Otome Nostalgia skirt | Axes Femme cutsew | Amavel cardigan | Angelic Pretty Brigitte Regimen OTKs | offbrand shoes | Cutie Creator headbow | Swimmer badges |

And to celebrate the first actual WFH coord of 2025 - an even more lazy styling!

My friend brought me these back from her trip to Japan and I felt they vibe with Otome Nostalgia pretty well in theme.

The first day of working from home of 2025 and kicking it off in style. And very little actual work, but shh, we’re glancing over that. The coord was cute, courtesy of one idea (the cutsew) and some input from Whering (the cardigan), and it was comfortable for a whole day of staying at home. Otome Nostalgia is such trusted staple, I can always count on her to pull through. Also, let’s all rejoice for Violet Fane returning – and start saving for those full shirring skirts.

Coord 3:Academia Vibes

| Metamorphose Shirring Tiered Ribbon JSK | Axes Femme blouse | Innocent World Original Lace Millefeuille bolero | Innocent World Fleur Checkered OTKs | Sosic Shop shoes | offbrand hair clip | Pypah’s Art earrings | Fantastic Grim Jewelry necklace | Axes Femme brooch |

Peep the cute book-themed art on my bookshelf!

These make me more happy than I can express.

A secret project was happening that day and I wanted to dress up in something with at least slight academia vibes. To me that means browns and earth tones, but I also wanted to be comfy, which took a turn to this brown x sax combo. I admit, it was so cold that day that I almost changed my mind about dressing up, but then the layered nature of frills makes it great for cold weather, so ultimately only my hands were freezing. As for the secret project… Let’s just say that if you’re one of those people who likes the sound of my voice (an idea that still perplexes me, but I know there are people like that out there), then you may enjoy this one.

Coord 4: Soft Elegance

| Innocent World White Double Braid Tartan skirt | offbrand cutsew and hair clip | Innocent World Original Lace Millefeuille bolero | Angelic Pretty Salon de The Rose OTKs | Hush Puppies boots | Crafty Witch by Nix earrings | Gravelvet Iridescent Princess necklace | Peacockalorum Silver Jewel Feather brooch |

Eyeliner and lipstick, and suddenly I manage to look more put-together. Magic.

My craft project got to double as a background for the detail shot of these earrings.

Another WFH day and another relaxed, though elegant coord. As well as another idea courtesy of Whering’s random outfit generator. Putting this lavender top with this cutsew was an interesting idea and whilst looking at the end result now, it could definitely have been done better, I like the outfit. If anything, it made me pine for more Innocent World in my wardrobe, but that might not be as doable as it sounds.

Coord 5: Cosy Wednesday

| Violet Fane Ginza Kissaten skirt | Axes Femme cutsew | DreamV cardigan | Snag tights | Sosic Shop shoes | Physical Drop headbow | Cosy Kawaii Mood earrings | Milkribbon Butterkeks brooch |

That one earring swinging wildly out of control...

There's something deeply nostalgic for me about brown and beige coords themed arounds biscuits and chocolates. That was a time in our fashion that I remember with unadulterated fondness.

More working from home in warmth and comfort. Although my heart has been wanting to goth up with Just One Bite, but the energy levels were not up for that much effort, so I went for something obvious and comfy. Because romanticising my daily life is the way forward in 2025.

Coord 6: Endless Crafting

| Dear Celine Magic Book OP | Innocent World Ribbon Lace Millefeuille bolero | Snag tights | Elf Armorie Cupid's Heart shoes | handmade (not by me) headbow | Vivienne Westwood Lorelei studs | Vivienne Westwood Mini Bas Relief pendant | Nona Gallery The Cat necklace |

This is like Hoshibako Works level of head-eating headbow, so I had to bust out the faux fringe.

It is gorgeous though, just look at it!

And entirely excessive endeavour to dress up just to craft, but we take every bit of motivation for finishing projects that we can. This OP is no longer quite as comfortable as it used to be, so the whole coord didn't stay on for long, only a couple of hours as I sewed, but I like it overall. It's the right balance of simple, yet effective. |

*~*~*~*
Coord 7: Giving in to the Darker Side

| Mary Magdalene Paulina JSK | Axes Femme cutsew | Innocent World Cross Lace bolero | Teja Jamilla Crown tights | Elf Armorie Cupid’s Heart shoes | handmade (not by me) headbow and earrings | offbrand necklace and ring |

My no-glasses-selfie skills went downhill with lack of practice, this took way too long to get.

Charity shop jewellery corners are usually full of trash, but occasionally there is something truly lovely to be found there.

I gave in to the internal nagging to dress in something darker (though not quite gothic). The coord also served as an excuse to try a different method of curling my hair, which failed completely, though at least it achieved some volume required for this giant bow. My necklace was an excellent charity shop find and whilst for most of the day I was, once again, doing very little of substance (work, cooking, crafts), it did lift my spirits. Not quite as much as my payday arriving a day early (apparently someone is in deep trouble for that, but I have a rapier now, I can defend them from the unfairness of capitalist bureaucracy!), but it still cheered me up.

*~*~*~*

Between the usual shite winter weather and the resulting lower energy levels, I haven’t prioritised wearing frills that often. My 2025 goals of going for comfort have also played a part, as the few times that I thought about dressing up, the ideas that had me excited were a bit more involved and I didn’t want to deal with elastics in unusual places or doing the styling the coord idea deserved. I’m sure things will pick up as the outside world warms up (and as I’m done sewing). They always do. Hopefully your January didn’t drag either and you’re ready to tackle the shortest month with some love.

2025 Wish/Need/Replace List

Reviewing one’s wishlist on an annual basis after being in the fashion for over a decade is an interesting process. Because on the one hand, not a lot of changes need to be made. On the other – it is precisely the subtlety of those changes that makes the difference in these. Just like in 2024, I’ll share my 2024 wish/need/replace list gains and removals before showing what these sections look like for 2025, since I found the section to look well and be offer that neat wrap up to one year before beginning another.

REPLACE

Last year I was left with only one item to replace and that was an ivory JSK. I managed to sell my Rosier Fleur by Alice and the Pirates and find this one from Atelier Pierrot (which I keep calling the Whip JSK even though there are notable differences between mine and this one) sometime around mid-summer. Even though it is still just a teeny bit shorter than what I’d prefer, in every other aspect it is fulfilling precisely the role that I wanted it to.

Shamelessly using a picture from the 1 Dress 4 Looks Take 71.

In theory this means that there are no more replacements needed in my wardrobe right now. And that is how it feels. I feel like this year will be focused more on non-direct replacements (i.e. getting rid of one item in favour of another one that is different). The purpose of this section was to make sure that I get better quality/better fitting versions of what I had already, so whilst there are still a few bits like that in my wardrobe, I don’t think that they need to be monitored quite so closely since they’re less urgent. If that changes at any point in the year, it will be duly noted in my quarterly reviews.

Sure, I’d love to replace my pearl jewellery with something proper, like antiques, but it’s nowhere near important enough to warrant putting down here.

NEED

As in previous years, it is the need list that shapes my focus the most, more so than my wishlists. In 2024 I managed to put my foot down: between finally finishing that beret and realising that I’d been doing just fine without the extra jewellery, that list got whittled down to just one item. One that will admittedly be much harder to find, but also one that isn’t that urgent.

The state of events at the end of 2024.

On the flipside, rather than kick off 2025 with only that one item still on my need list, I am once more adding to it. Some of these required some very honest reflection on what differentiates a need from a want, and my conclusion here was that if having something would reduce my stress levels and make me do fewer mental gymnastics when it came to coording, then that was enough to constitute something a needed item.

At the same time, the true moment of honesty was realising that my actual big needs were all in my non-lolita wardrobe, which I don’t give nearly as much thought and attention to as the EGL side. Some of them would be more expensive purchases in an effort to invest in quality for the years ahead, so scaling down the lolita need list was just as important as identifying the right things to go on it. I am quite quickly approaching a point where my lack of attention to the non-lolita clothing will start to bite me, something which I would very much like to avoid.

Long story short, I survived. The Big Thinking About My Need List, that is. And here is what the lolita need list for 2025 was eventually whittled down to just two items:

Need list for 2025.

  • Long boots in white or brown
  • Wine underskirt, preferably in a stiffer fabric than chiffon

Yes, the sax bolero has been demoted to a wishlist item instead of a need, whilst a wine underskirt has been upgraded from a wish to a need. Between my wardrobe moving away from blues and wearing that one wine OP as an underskirt probably three times now, this needed to be re-evaluated. Also, items that will help with wearing the fashion in different weathers, as well as ones that will add comfort trump all else. I admit to falling sway to a few too many coord pictures with lolita-specific boots (I don’t know if they’ve ever fallen out of style, but I certainly noticed more of then in the last few months than previously). But I live in a wet place that gets cold easily, if the boots also happen to be comfortable enough to walk a whole day in, then they count!

WISH

Unlike 2023, last year was not successful in tracking down wishlist items. Part of me is happy with this because the main pieces that I did buy are just as great for my wardrobe, but part of me makes me more determined to track at least one or two down this year.

That being said, the wishlist isn’t entirely without changes. Whilst the specific prints remain the same, I’ve added some bits into the last row of the main pieces list. I’ve hinted at this in the 2025 Goals post, but effectively, having come to terms with some pieces requiring more dressing up than I can be bothered to on a WFH day (and not being willing to sacrifice dressing up on a WFH day), I’ve decided that it’d be good to include between 3 to 5 main pieces that are very casual and easy to throw on. No more than that and preferably sticking to skirts and OPs, though I wouldn’t say no to maybe one of these pieces being a JSK. Ok, fine, this is me saying I want more Physical Drop clothes. There, I said it.

Main pieces wishlist for 2025.

For the record:

  • Fanciful wishes
    • Meta’s Airline JSK in navy
    • Mary Magdalene’s Arabesque Rose in ivory (original release with shirring)
    • Angelic Pretty’s Antoinette Decoration JSK in ivory (now prefer the non-bustier cut)
    • BtSSB’s Antoinette Bouquet JSK in wine, the 2012 Memorial Series cut
  • Seasonal wishes
    • BtSSB’s Kumya’s Christmas Market JSK in either red or sax
    • A sailor collar OP in navy or ivory (any brand, as long as it’d fit me, preferably in cotton or linen)
    • BtSSB’s DOKI DOKI Strawberry Magic skirt in red
  • Daily wishes
    • Innocent World’s Cool Rose JSK in wine
    • A floral skirt, preferably fully shirred
    • A solid fully shirred skirt in an earth tone (warm brown, emerald green or ivory), pink or, at a push, wine red
    • A solid short sleeve OP with an open neckline, preferably in cotton or natural fibre, in ivory, green, pink or, at a push, wine red
    • A solid JSK in a simple design in an earth tone (warm brown, emerald green or ivory) or wine red at a push (alternatively, a small neutral pattern such as florals, will do)

The non-dress wishlist side enjoyed a little bit more of a success thanks to grabbing the Cross Lace bolero from Innocent World, as well as grabbing that mesh apron. Whilst not a major feat by any measure, it is a success nonetheless.

The state of events at the end of 2024.

In 2025 I would really like to continue incorporating more layering pieces. The bow top from Naddine Atelier was such a fun addition that I still haven’t explored fully and at this point, it’s items like these that make my wardrobe stretch further. So although the bulk of this wishlist remains the same (factoring the changes mentioned already), there are a couple of additions that have found their way here.

Non-main pieces wishlist for 2025.

In text this wishlist reads:

  • The Millefeuille boleros
    • the pure smooth Millefeuille in any colourway;
    • the shell lace Millefeuille, which I originally wanted in brown, but now that I have the 2012 original lace one in brown I will take shell lace one in any colourway;
    • and a pink Millefeuille in any kind of lace (they were only ever available in rose and ribbon, and given how hard ribbon lace is to find second hand, I am trying to stay realistic by keeping my options open).
  • Layering pieces
    • A front-lacing cottagecore corset vest/bodice in sole ivory-based gobelin
    • A long sleeve bolero in sax (Millefeuille style)
    • A classic gobelin or solid ivory bustier, vest-like in shape or at least with a deep scoop neckline
    • A wine red overskirt, organza/tulle/chiffon/lace/mesh, mid length rather than full
    • A gold overskirt, organza/tulle/chiffon/lace/mesh, any length up to knee-length
  • Accessories
    • A wine vintage hat, either a percher or a wide brim
    • Angelic Pretty Girly Sticker pochette

THE INKLINKS

Usually my annual wish/need/replace lists end with things that have been previewed at some point and that I foresee myself getting. Not this time. There hasn’t been a single preview (not from EGL brands anyway) that had me thinking that I was in danger. This is good in that hopefully I will be given the space to save up in the run up to The Great Lace, where I hope to maybe indulge in some US-based indie brands’ clothing (and save on that sweet shipping). But it’s also not good because it means that stuff can take me by surprise. But let’s stay positive.

Looking back on the whole post, this is such a scaled down list compared to what I’m used to putting up here. Which isn’t a bad thing, as I said, I should be focusing more on my non-lolita wardrobe before it becomes an urgent problem. That being said, with how structured EGL fashion is, I find it easier to be specific (and to know where to shop) with it. Outside of lolita the choice is so overwhelming and, sadly, second hand clothes sellers lack the discipline and specificity that I am used to from lolita shopping, which makes the shopping experience so much worse. Still, let’s not get too pessimistic. As my overall aim for 2025 is to have a more restful year and to be creative in other areas of my life, a scaled down wishlist will hopefully help me achieve that.

How are your wishlists looking at the (still) start of the year? If you haven’t updated yours yet, why is that? And if you have – what was the main principle guiding you with what was allowed on the wishlist and what wasn’t (if you had that)?

2025 Lolita Goals

It’s been more than enough time to reflect on what I’d like to accomplish in 2025. A lot of what I’d like to focus my energy on is not related to lolita fashion at all, however, I’ve managed to pick out a few EGL-specific things. Rather than include things such as ‘finish crafting an item for a specific coord I want to wear’, my focus here is more on goals that will span the whole year. I would like to use these goals as a compass of sorts with my direction in this fashion and not just an accountability checklist for one-off tasks.

1. Get some pieces altered

Following the successful elimination of many items that don’t fit me comfortably anymore, I have a small handful of ones that also don’t, but that I’d like to alter since to me they are pieces for keeps. Haenuli’s Lovely Memories JSK is the one that I know for sure right now and in due course I will see if a few more need it too namely:

  • AP’s Cinema Doll JSK
  • Dear Celine’s Magic Book OP
  • IW’s Georges Rose JSK
  • IW’s Revival Sweet Teddybear JSK
  • and Violet Fane’s Charming Town skirt

It’s been too long sacrificing comfort for looks. 2025 is the year we cut that crap out!

2. Invest more in classic and casual main pieces

Whilst I will elaborate on that in the wish/need/replace list post, I do find my wardrobe to be more sweet at the moment. I was reminded of my yearning for the simple classic styles of Mary Magdalene, which is also extremely wearable, which I’d like to delve into more, especially having found a few options for where to source that in my size. In a similar vein, a lot of what I own I’ve already worn in both dressed up and dressed down ways and I’d like to let pieces that look better when they’re dressed up stay like that. This doesn’t work for my work from home coords, when I typically have less will to do elaborate stuff, so having a couple of pieces that do well with just being thrown on would help me along the way. It’d also come in useful for travel because right now I feel like I am wearing the same handful of skirts and OPs every time I travel and need to transport my petticoat. I don’t want this to be a complete wardrobe overhaul, I still enjoy sweet lolita, so just a couple of additions (maybe 3-5 in total) would do the trick.

I may have fallen a little bit in love with the classic OPs from Atelier Le Carrousel.

3. Do not get roped in to organising more than 1 big meet

This is going to extend a little bit further into managing my energy levels better, but based on 2024 I think it’s fair to say that I should only be allowed to organise or co-organise only one big meet. And by big I mean something ILD-scale or larger, requiring deposits, spreadsheets, budgets, multiple moving pieces etc. Stuff that isn’t just a ‘Make a reservation and then have a good time’, but that takes up weeks or even months of brain space from me. I love organising lolita meets and events – but it’s precisely because I love doing so that I tend to do it at the expense of my own rest. This won’t work with multiple other hobbies, people I’d like to be seeing, ongoing creative projects, and a full-time job in my role. If it’s a simple meet (museum visits, small group bookings, things that are done with one phone call), then I can jump in. But with the one exception of next year’s Christmas lunch, I would like to take a back seat and just enjoy myself.

My rest doesn't have to be exclusively at 4 and 5 star hotels, but let me just enjoy the meets instead of putting them on so frequently.

That last one will make for a very fun review every quarter lol. However, overall these three goals represent comfort, reducing stress, and rest, which are worthwhile things to pursue just in general. My more creative or ambitious goals are definitely confined to the non-EGL spaces, so hopefully this way they will balance each other out to allow for a fulfilled life.

Are any of you making/have made 2025 resolutions? Who’s with me on the rest and recreation bandwagon and who’s trying to go big in 2025? However your 2025 will swing, I wish that you find fulfilment in it!

End of 2024 Lolidrobe Reassessment Post

Considering the deafening silence from me over the course of December, it is pretty safe to say that I have had my fill of 2024. Not that it was bad, to the contrary! But a year packed with good stuff is still quite tiring when you consider that it’s been 12 months of it.

Overview of Acquisitions

Kicking things off with the usual tallying everything that I gained this year. I’m no longer calling it ‘purchases’ because even though ‘acquisitions’ sounds so very formal, a bunch of these were gifts or handmade bits, so ‘purchases’ isn’t exactly the catch-all term that it should be.

  • 2 JSKs
  • 1 skirt
  • 8 tops (1 gothic bolero in navy)
  • 2 over-layers
  • 1 under-layer
  • 3 pairs of legwear
  • 2 pairs of shoes (1 pair of classic heels in green)
  • 1 bag
  • 25 sets of accessories (1 classic headbow in ivory, 1 classic necklace in gold, 1 sweet ring in brown, 1 pair of classic earrings in bronze, 1 pair of sweet earrings in blue, 1 sweet brooch in beige, 1 sweet beret in red, 1 classic headbow in navy, 1 classic hat in grey, 1 classic headdress in offwhite, 1 sweet neckerchief in blue)

Compared to last year’s nearly 90 things, 2024 has really slowed down with acquisitions at half of that, even though frequently it did not feel like it. Probably in part because not buying lolita didn’t necessarily stop me from shopping, I just focused more on my non-lolita wardrobe. I still think that that’s where my energy is most needed and will carry that into 2025 with me, but with at least one big lolita event already on the cards, I’m not sure how well that will go. And of the things that I purchased this year, many have featured repeatedly in my outfits, be it more of the same (Elf Armorie shoes are unbeatable!) or something new (the Naddine Atelier bow top is a joy to style).

The Year of Big Event Organising

Between running the fashion show at The Queen is Dead and subsequently co-organising The Big Northern EGL Bring and Buy (not to mention some smaller events in between), I have sure been busy. And it felt great to do both. Often challenging, but with great challenges comes a great sense of accomplishment and great rewards. Whilst I have also organised some smaller meetups, I’ve been very content to simply attend the smaller bits and channel my energy into the bigger projects. If my new role continues at the pace that it has been at so far, then I should continue to have the energy to do precisely that, which I would love. But if that’s not what turns out to be on the cards for me, then that will be fine too. I probably won’t stop stretching myself out too thin at times, but maybe I could compromise with one big thing done jointly with someone else.

Doing important jobs dressed in silly stuff, that should be my tagline!

The Year of Wardrobe Cleansing

That actually sounds way grander than it was. However, between another style shift and a big burst of motivation to get rid of things that no longer served me, it was quite a cleanse. It isn’t quite complete yet, in the sense that I haven’t even begun listing things due to consistently running out of daylight after the Bring and Buy to photograph things, so this will be a task for the new year. That and a few things will need to join the alterations pile, so they’re not so much of an official cleanse as a refresh. Still, I have found a new direction for my style that actually has me excited and I am humbled by the reminders of being a new lolita when you just want to get to the goal now and not through the long, patient journey. But the important thing is that I am getting there, one change at a time.

And clearly I wasn't the only one with that idea, as the picture is from the Big Northern EGL Bring and Buy.

The Year of Captain Chris

I mean, you can’t have a 300% increase of Captain Chris in your collection in the space of a weekend and not count that as a raging success. Given December 2023’s acquisition of Kinnōsuke, the Kumakumya, this should probably be called the year of plush mascots, but as much as I love my firstborn, Captain Chris’ charisma is simply irresistible. It’s all in that blep.

May the power of blep compel you!

Review of 2024 Goals

Four goals of mixed effort levels for 2023 have yielded some mixed results. Looking at them now, I think that the ones I succeeded in were a little bit less effort or more of a concentrated very short burst of effort as opposed to a sustained one.

  1. Did I finish the craft projects I started in 2023? I finished one! The blog post about how the beret got made is up here. That only leaves the collar, but in a true crafter style, I found another project to distract me, which is on a bit of a deadline, so we’ll have to see about the collar… Half completed goal is better than none.
  2. Did I learn a new hairstyle? Absolutely not lol! What I did learn was to scale down my outfit ideas on work from home days, when I am most likely to have freshly washed hair and the will to dress up, saving the more elaborate things for the weekends. Clearly what was important here was my comfort (which includes laziness) over aesthetics.
  3. Did I sort through my bags? With some redefining, I’m going to count this one as a success. I got rid of the bags that I definitely don’t use and don’t envision myself using. I replaced the peeling strap of one non-lolita bag. And I had a very long, hard look at the Innocent World bag, which is the other main culprit for peeling, but am yet to make a decision on what to do with it. The right thing is to probably replace it. But it is such a cute design that I can’t quite bring myself to do it.

What else can I say at this point? This has been a pretty packed year – and I clearly burned myself out a little by the end. Well, actually… Not quite burned out. I found another project that got me excited and took over my time and creative energy. As much as I’d love to, it is physically impossible to give myself to every single creative project and I don’t want to blog/make YouTube videos just for the sake of it. So expect a lot of slowing down of the content here, only putting something out when I have an idea that I’m excited by. And if you’re here as much for me as you are for the lolita fashion stuff, then keep an eye on my Instagram because that new project will be being advertised there once it is ready. And it’s not like I’m planning to stop wearing frills either, so there will always be pictures and the coord roundup posts to come back for.
